Celebrating Women in Engineering: Why Representation Still Matters

Shining a Light on Inclusion and Opportunity

Today marks International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), a vital opportunity to spotlight the achievements of women in the field and confront the challenges that remain. Despite progress, only 16.5% of engineers in the UK are women. That number speaks volumes.

Engineering shapes the world around us, from energy and infrastructure to design and innovation. It’s creative, meaningful, and essential. Yet, far too many girls still aren’t encouraged to see it as a future for themselves.

At Momentum Training Solutions, we believe diverse, skilled teams are stronger teams. That means empowering more women to pursue engineering careers, not just during INWED, but all year round.

“Over the past 7 years, I’ve seen girls take on engineering apprenticeships and absolutely flourish,” says Terri Lennon, Business Manager – Commercial Training at Momentum.
“What makes the difference is early encouragement, access to hands-on experiences, and seeing real role models. That’s how we change perceptions.”

What Needs to Change

  • Confidence begins young. Girls need to be told early that engineering is for them.

  • Representation matters. Seeing women succeed in engineering helps normalise ambition and possibility.

  • Workplace culture counts. Employers must continue to create inclusive environments that value all talent.

  • Training and access open doors. We need to make technical education more available, practical, and welcoming to everyone.

Momentum’s hands-on training programmes give learners the skills and confidence to thrive, whether they’re new to the industry or looking to upskill. And we’re proud to support women at every stage of their engineering journey.

Let’s Build the Future — Together

International Women in Engineering Day isn’t just a celebration, it’s a call to action. We must continue working together to make engineering a career where everyone belongs.

To the women in engineering: we see you, we support you, and we celebrate everything you bring to this industry.
